How to Make Peach Ice Cream

This homemade ice cream is made with simple, wholesome ingredients and juicy peaches. Let me show you how I make it.

Ingredients

Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, notes, and estimated nutritional information.

  • Whole peaches – Fresh whole ripe peaches are best, but frozen peaches can be used after they’ve been thawed.
  • Maple syrup – The small amount used with the peaches enhances the flavor of the peaches. It’s not enough to give it a maple flavor. A bit more is used in the ice cream mixture as well.
  • whole milk and heavy whipping cream – Full-fat dairy gives it a rich and creamy taste and texture and the best results. I do not recommend using low-fat dairy for these reasons.
  • sugar – Granulated sugar
  • kosher salt – This bit of salt enhances the sweetness of the ice cream.
  • vanilla extract – Use homemade vanilla or your choice of quality pure vanilla extract.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Roast the peaches.

This secret to the recipe makes such a scrumptious difference! The peaches take on a deeper, richer flavor and become even sweeter when they are roasted for just a few minutes. It also gives them a more tasty texture.

Slice the peaches in half and remove the pit. Place peaches skin side down on a pan or skillet, drizzle with maple syrup, and roast as directed in the recipe. Take care to not burn them. Then remove from oven and set aside to cool completely. Plan to roast them a while ahead of making ice cream so they can completely cool.

Once completely cool, peel and chop the peaches.

Finish making ice cream.

After mixing in the chopped peaches, allow the ice cream to continue making until it has completely made in the ice cream maker.

Serve immediately or freeze for later. Enjoy soft-serve ice cream immediately or freeze for scooping.

Serving and Freezing Instructions

To enjoy soft serve ice cream. If you wish to enjoy immediately after it’s made, scoop into serving bowls or cones for soft serve ice cream.

To freeze for scooping. If not eating immediately as a soft-serve ice cream and wish to enjoy later as firmer, scoop ice cream, then freeze it immediately. Place the ice cream in an airtight container with lid or a dish or loaf pan, wrap very well, and place in freezer for a few hours to overnight for a firmer ice cream. Then serve by scooping and return any remaining ice cream to the freezer.

Ice cream should last in the freezer for about two weeks.

Homemade ice cream needs to be enjoyed a bit faster than store bought as homemade doesn’t contain preservatives.

Recipe Tips

  • The peaches you use are important. Ripe, juicy peaches are best. You can use frozen peaches after they are completely thawed. However, I do not recommend using canned peaches for this recipe. Roasting the peaches as the recipe adds another level of flavor as well!
  • Start with a frozen ice cream maker bowl. I keep the bowl, or insert, for my ice cream maker in the freezer all the time that it’s not in use. That way it is always ice cold and ready to make ice cream. If you don’t store it in the freezer, I recommend placing it in the freezer a couple of days prior to use for the best results. It will help the ice cream freeze better and be smoother

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you use dairy with high-fat content?

Ice cream is better with dairy with high-fat content, such as heavy whipping cream and whole milk. It is what helps give the ice cream its smooth and creamy texture as well as its rich flavor. Low-fat dairy can leave the ice cream lacking in flavor, may not freeze as well, and can make the ice cream icy. Generally, the higher the fat content, the richer and smoother the ice cream will be.

Why is sugar important in ice cream?

Not only does sugar make the ice cream sweet, sugar may actually affect the texture. Too little can cause the ice cream to be hard as a rock, and too much may keep it from freezing properly.
