    How much rice per person

The rice calculator can help you determine the amount of dry rice (uncooked rice) you need to feed a person. It works for any type of rice: white, brown, Basmati, Jasmine, Black japonica, Arborio (risotto rice), as well as any type of grain (long grain, short grain, or medium grain rice).

    How many cups per person

If rice is the primary dish, use half a cup of uncooked rice per person (US legal cups), or ¾ rice cooker cups per person. Rice typically doubles its weight and volume when cooked, so that ½ cup would become about one full US cup. Consider increasing the amount to ¾ cups or a full rice cooker cup if feeding a large or especially hungry adult.

If rice is a side dish, typically about ⅔ of the above amount is recommended, so about ¼ US legal cup, or ⅓ of a rice cooker cup.

    How many grams per person

For a primary dish made primarily of rice, consider 90-100 grams per person. When cooked, it roughly doubles to 200 grams of cooked rice per serving. If it is a side dish, the recommended amount is about 60g of uncooked rice per person. As it expands after cooking, absorbing water, it will equal to 120g of cooked rice.

For other measures of dry rice, including milliliters (ml), fluid ounces, and imperial units, use our calculator above.

How much is one serving of rice

One serving of cooked rice is roughly 1 US legal cup or about 1.5 rice cooker cups. This is equivalent to 180 to 200 grams per serving. To prepare this amount of rice, you need roughly half the amount of dry rice in a recipe.

    Uncooked to cooked rice calculation

Converting dry rice to cooked rice amounts is a common task when one wants to plan and scale a cooking recipe. All types of rice roughly double in volume and weight after being cooked as they absorb the water and oil present in the rice cooker, pot, or frying pan. Therefore, a good rule of thumb to find out how much cooked rice one cup dry rice is, is to simply double the uncooked amount.

Some examples for uncooked to cooked rice equivalences:

    • 1 cup dry rice equals 2 cups of cooked rice.
    • 2 cups of uncooked rice equal 4 cups of cooked rice.
    • 3 cups of uncooked equal 6 cups of cooked rice.
    • 4 cups equal 8 cups when cooked.
    • 100 g of dry rice is 200 g of cooked rice.
    • 250 g of dry rice equals 500 g of cooked rice.

The math to find how much cooked rice you will end up with is that easy, but you can use our uncooked rice to cooked rice calculator to help speed it up. Note that the type of rice does not really matter as all properly cooked rice expands to roughly twice its size. To avoid undercooking or overcooking your rice, make sure you get the rice to water ratio right, as well as the cooking time. Undercooked rice can be saved by adding a bit of water (if it had evaporated or was fully absorbed), and leaving for a little longer on the stove. Overcooked rice is, unfortunately, not something you can recover from.

Cooked white long grain rice contains about 59 Calories per half-cup of cooked rice or about 117 Calories per half-cup of dry rice. This comes from the USDA measurement of 130 Calories per 100 grams of cooked white long grain rice which translates to roughly 234 Calories per serving [1].
